Question The members of the Grey Company and their fates?

    Hello all,

Part of my character's backstory is her ongoing interactions with the members of the Grey Company (the in-game faction, not the kinship). Unfortunately, this element of her backstory didn't really begin to emerge until well into their storylines, and now I realize that I can't remember all the ones I've met, and what eventually happens to each of them.

I've checked on here and the LotRO Wiki as best as I could, but if anyone happens to have a full list (or knows where I might find one), I would really appreciate it! (For bonus points and much gratitude, the specific quests where certain members meet untimely ends would also be welcome.)

I'm not averse to spoilers, but please tag them as such just in case others ARE averse.

The ones I have so far are:

    Amarion
    Amlan
    Andreg
    Braigiar
    Calenglad
    Candaith
    Corunir
    Culang
    Daervunn
    Dagoras
    Elrohir
    Golodir
    Halbarad
    Halros
    Himeinior
    Idhrenfair
    Lothrandir
    Mincham
    Prestadir
    Radanir
    Saeradan

(I intend to update this post based on any info I get from folks.)

    Thanks in advance!

    That is an excellent list.

You left one person out. Since I know his fate (it's in the books), I sha'n't name him. IM me if you want to know.

Book 10 Update: Five more Rangers of the Grey Company are given names, only one of them is still alive. None of them have been encountered anywhere else in the game before:

    1. Hodhon from Annuminas. Friend of Calenglad. Perished at the Forsaken Road.
    2. Calithil from Trollshaws. Friend of Radanir. Perished at the Forsaken Road.
    3. Linnor from Bree-Land. Friend of Saeradan. Perished at the Forsaken Road.
    4. Himeldir. Perished at the Forsaken Road.
    5. Helchon. Went with Calenglad into the Mournshaws and was granted audience at the Huntsman's Court.

Total tally for the current date:

Total number of named Grey Company Rangers: 63. Not counting unnamed ones (such as Healer/Provisioner), Halros and the Sons of Elrond.

Total number of confirmed KIA: 7. Five of them at the Forsaken Road (Hodhon, Calithil, Linnor, Himeldir, Candaith), one in Grawenwood (Andreg), one in Tur Morva (Braigiar). Tur Morva ambush obviously lead to more deaths, but none of them were named.

Rangers, who currently left the Grey Company: 3. Lothrandir is still imprisoned in Isengard, Saeradan left the Company and is returning North, Amarion failed to return from patrol and is currently considered MIA according to Dagoras. His fate is unknown.

Total number of confirmed survivors: 10. Halbarad, Radanir, Calenglad, Golodir, Corunir, Prestadir, Helchon are confirmed to have survived by the latest Epic. Amlan, Daervunn and Dagoras appear in landscape quests and skirmish set post-Tur Morva ambush. Saeradan and Lothrandir not included, because of the above category.

Total number of Rangers with current status unknown: 43. In other words, most of those Rangers listed above whom we met in non-Epic quests in Enedwaith (and Naeglanc from Dunland). Some inevitably perished in Tur Morva, because by the time they finally reach Aragorn exactly 30 remain, meaning at least 20 in addition to the previous category.

    Notes:

Tugonn and 2 other Rangers from Ost Dunhoth changed clothes from SoA-style Rangers to Grey Company members during ITA scaling.

A quest from Grimbold involving Dagoras in Nan Curunir still erroneously states that Braigiar died during Orc ambush in Grawenwood, despite his death in Tur Morva being a significant plot point in the Epic. The Error was acknowledged, but still not adressed.

Increment the numbers in categories 1 and 4 by One if you had Halros join in the Grey Company and not stay in the Shire.

To Lore-experts Berephon and MadeOfLions if you are reading this: I really hope we can get all 30 Rangers named by the time they finally "come to Aragorn's aid in time. This way we can at least determine who lived and who died. Personally hope the latter are mostly those from Harndirion skirmish camp - those are new and don't have any lines or backstory.

Halbarad eventually dies at Pelennor Fields, but not all Rangers do. According to Return of the King, some of them live to fight at the Black Gates and some of those even make it back to Eriador with Hobbits, Gandalf and Elrond following Aragorn's coronation.

    Love this post.

I'm not going to go on the record with specific names (yet), but I will say that the rather hilariously well-populated Skirmish camp at Harndirion was particularly hard-hit by the attack in Tur Morva.

Hahah! I figured, poor blokes. And I figured that they were the ones lost in the 'dead' caves.

By the way, these are the best session plays, by far, since Oin in Moria's epic. Well done. I loved tying all those loose ends, trust me!

I cannot wait to see what the final thirty are, (and if Halros is in the final thirty if you had him go, and if so, who the thirtieth is if you had him stay!)

I wonder why Thortann and Lenglinn have not yet been seen on the way south. Did they stay in the Bree-lands?

    Malachi,
    Great job!
Awesome of you to keep track of the latest developments.

I believe Saeradan headed back to Breelands probably means he will be involved in the scourging of the Shire.

I think they stayed on in Breelands.

I did my best. I'm not quite sure about all the Pelennor Fields stuff. This is based on the Wiki and my memory. Please point out any mistakes.

Green - Alive after the Pelennor Fields.
Red - Known to be Perished
Orange - Perished or Alive, depending on Choice
Yellow - Departed from the Grey Company
Blue - Appeared in Pelargir. Status after Pelennor unknown
White - Status unknown, though known to have survived Túr Morva
    Purple - Missing

Total Number of GC Members: 63+1 The +1 is Halros who stays behind in the Shire depending on choices.
Known KIA: 35+1 I am counting Amarion who went missing on Patrol so perhaps 9 KIA and 1 MIA. The +1 is Halros, who is dead or not depending on choices.
    MIA: 1 Poor Amarion
Known Survivors: 8 This is only people who survived the Battle of the Pelennor Fields or returned home and are not involved in the action.
    Known Departures: 1 Saeradan
Status Uncertain: 18 By my count, 8 of these appear in or near Pelargir and are known therefore to have made it to Gondor. The remaining 10 were last seen in Enedwaith or Dunland.

Met Aragorn: 28+1/30 I think the books say that 30 GC members met Aragorn, inferring from posts above. We know 8 survived and 8 were seen in Gondor and of the KIA 2 + 1 fell on the Fields of Pelennor. Prestadir appears in a Session Play after the end of the Imprisonment of the GC and Dagoras is outside Isengard itself, making it unlikely he would return north to Tur Morva. Hope we get their names

p.s. This is updated after MoL's post. I didn't want to spam you all with more lists so continuity of this thread is weird. This post should be better though.

Red - Known to be Perished

Yellow - Departed from the Grey Company
Blue - Known or Suspected to have survived Túr Morva, but Pelennor Status unknown.
White - Status after Túr Morva unknown.

Met Aragorn: 20+1/30 I think the books say that 30 GC members met Aragorn, inferring from posts above. If we count them as having survived Túr Morva, we have about 20+1/30 survivor names. That means of the 34 whose fate after Túr Morva is uncertain, about 9 survived. Hope we get their names

p.s. Im getting myself kind of confused with counting/not counting that Elf at the end, Halros, Aragorn and Elrond's sons. If someone can check my math that would be great.
Haha, yep, the numbers do get rather confusing at times! Thank you for updating this though - I've not taken stock of Rangers since we last met them at Pelargir (pre-Pelennor). I'm still hoping that other than the 'epic' Grey Company (those who appear in the Epic storyline), the remainder of which we see on the Threshold of the City after the Battle (Calenglad, Radanir, Lothrandir, Corunir, Langlas - I think that's all of them), there are still a fair few questions as to the fate of other important Rangers.

Chief amongst these must be Prestadir, who has featured in the epic multiple times, but isn't present after the Battle, but wasn't seen to die during the Battle either. Alongside him are Daervunn (last seen in the Quays of Harlond, breaking down a gate alongside Corunir, Golodir and Calenglad), and Dagoras (last seen in Orthanc, but mentioned in passing by Lothrandir, whom he lent a steed to for the ride to Pelargir from Rohan), as well as Celairant (who helped Langlas during the Battle of Pelargir, but doesn't appear next to him at the Threshold of the City).

Hopefully MoL still plans to tell us eventually the surviving members of the Grey Company, and where those who didn't make it met their ends.

I can probably at least cross off the names of those who didn't make it out of Tur Morva, since it's been so long. I reserve the right to bring any of these guys back if I've gotten their names wrong or confused them with someone else, but this is a good starting point for updating the list, anyway. As a funny aside (which I mentioned years ago in this very post!), the addition of the skirmish camp at Harndirion really bloated the numbers of the Grey Company and made Tur Morva even worse than it was going to be. If it was up to me I wouldn't have made the guys at Harndirion Rangers, but once they were we had to account for them. :P

    Lost in Tur Morva:
Amrúnir, Anglaer, Annúdhrod, Areneth, Badhordam, Balchelos, Banganir, Baradír, Braigiar, Cannuion, Celenath, Calatherdir, Demúr (the Ranger, not the Elf. Don't really know what the Elf's deal is), Dúnhammad, Duvengris, Fainneleg, Ferrif, Galasebdir, Gemniphred, Gernad, Handarod, Himeinior, Iorecthel, Legrindavor, Maedhrusc, Nidgyl, and Orchith

I'm not going to do the same thing for Pelennor casualties yet, because there's still drama to get from some of those in-game.

Thank you very much for this, MoL.

Its sad to see some important names on this list - Areneth, for instance, appeared to be quite the beast (it may just be that he's cunningly standing at the top of the slope up to Gath Forthnir, and as such looks taller!), and the names Balchelos, Cannuion, Calatherdir, Fainneleg, Ferrif, Galasebdir, Himeinior and Maedhrusc also stand out as Rangers that we interacted with before the Grey Company rode south.

After some serious colour coding on my end (and with help from one_ring's list above), I've got a list of those whose fates (post-Tur Morva) are unaccounted for. There are 11 of these:
    - Amarion (still not going to accept he's dead until there's confirmation that Saruman or one of his servants captured him!)
    - Brungos
    - Culang (the riddle guy, woo!)
    - Helchon
    - Idhrenfair (originally Mirkwood, later sends you to meet the Hobbits of the Mournshaws)
    - Idhrien
    - Mincham (pursued by the dead!)
    - Naeglanc (the mysterious leader of Echad Naeglanc!)
    - Nestadron
    - Nethraw (the seven swords!)
    - Tugonn (Aragorn's old travelling companion, also found in Ost Dunhoth)

    Total = 11

If we add these to those we met in Pelargir:
    - Amlan
    - Angwedh
    - Calenglad
    - Celairant
    - Corunir
    - Daervunn
    - Dagoras (doesn't actually appear at Pelargir, but Lothrandir mentions him, so I assume he was still around at this point)
    - Faeron
    - Golodir
    - Langlas
    - Lothrandir
    - Mandan
    - Mithrendan
    - Orthonn
    - Prestadir
    - Radanir
    - Techeron

Total = 17 (if we include Halbarad and the sons of Elrond, that goes up to 20 - if we include Halros, that's 21).

Therefore, if we add those two lists up, and assuming that there are no unnamed characters in the Grey Company post-Pelargir, at most there are 32 rangers that meet Aragorn near the Fords of Isen.

If we discount Halros (because, as we know, his membership of the Grey Company is up to the player), then we're still left with 31 - and according to what I can find online (I've mislaid my novels!), that's the total number of the Grey Company when they meet Aragorn (including Halbarad and the sons of Elrond). I'm hoping this means that Amarion is safe up until this point, although if we take Halros into account, the poor ranger of Amon Raith may be a goner!

Amarion was in my first draft of 'The Ballad of Bingo Boffin,' but he didn't end up making an appearance. I consider him alive but missing until revealed otherwise, although he didn't meet up with Aragorn when the rest of the Grey Company did.

*SPOILERS UP TO THE LATEST BOOK OF THE EPIC IN THIS POST*

    ----------------------

I'm now tempted to speculate as to the fates of these surviving members of the Grey Company post-Tur Morva. Obviously the second half of the list all survives the Battle of Pelargir, but I wonder if any of the first half perished there.

Then we get the Battle of the Pelennor Fields... we already know that Halbarad, Golodir and Halros (if he goes with the Grey Company) perish in the Battle, but given the Rangers previous lack of luck, this seems like a rather light tally.of deaths from the biggest conflict Middle Earth has ever seen, even though their arrival does signal the turn of the tide. Those rangers that we know for certain survive are:
    - Calenglad
    - Radanir
    - Corunir
    - Lothrandir
    - Langlas

If we add Elrohir and Elladan to this list, there are 10 members of the Grey Company whose fates we know at the end of the Battle. That leaves 21 Of these, we see Daervunn in the Quays of Harlond, if memory serves, during the little drama section at the end of the Battle, so it seems likely that he survives. However, the fates of all the others are up for grabs.

Given that Langlas and Celairant have been inseparable in the past, I think Celairant's absence at the Threshold of the City suggests that he was killed during the battle. I also worry about Prestadir, as since Dunland he'd been part of the 'A-list' Grey Company (featuring in the epic), yet he isn't present at the Threshold of the City. In addition to these two likely casualties, I think some of the more 'red-shirt'-y members (those we met for the first time in Enedwaith, for instance) are likely to have died in the battle.

I do hope that in the aftermath of the Battle, a couple of the Grey Company are found in the High Hall (which I found when running around on Bullroarer earlier - what a glorious place!), injured, but crucially still alive, after the battle, as this would exempt them from the final battle at the Black Gate. Orthonn (introduced as a young and rather bookish ranger - although I can't remember if that was in his quests in the North Downs, or later, in Pelargir) and Culang (to me, he seems more of a riddler than a fighter) are two that I'd want to spare from the final Battle at the Black Gate!

As for those that I do hope will be at the Black Gate, I feel the honour should go to the most doughty of the Grey Company. This, of course, needs to include the remaining A-listers:
    - Calenglad (maybe Halbarad's successor as leader of the Grey Company? He seems pretty senior in the ranger hierarchy - I think he's likely to meet his end at the Black Gate given Gwindeth's words in Vol 3, Book 1)
    - Radanir (this guy seriously needs to survive - we really need to have a drink with him back in Eriador!)
    - Corunir (has had huge character development since his Vol 1 character, to kill him off would be a bit of a waste, in my opinion)
    - Lothrandir (after Isengard, I feel this guy has survived too much to die!)

The others I think will/should be at the Black Gate:
    - Amlan (someone needs to represent Bree-land now Andreg's dead and Saeradan has headed back to the north!)
    - Mincham (he's faced death down many times)
    - Dagoras (for some reason, probably one of my favourite B-list - those that we've had quests from, but met pre-Enedwaith - rangers, his infiltration of Isengard shows his capability)
    - Tugonn (one of the oldest of the Rangers, given that he was Aragorn's companion when he first met Gandalf, and I assume that was pre-Thorongil-esque adventures)
    - Idhrenfair (if Prestadir has died, then his old friend from Mirkwood needs to represent the Mirkwood branch of the Dunedain at the Last Stand)
    - Naeglanc (there must be some quality to him that gave him the command of a camp in the Bonevales when we'd never encountered him in Eriador!)

As for some of the others:
    - Daervunn - I kinda feel as if he should stay behind in Minas Tirith, to look after any injured rangers, given his quartermaster-esque role in the Company
    - Nethraw - I reckon he came across the High Archives of Minas Tirith, and got completely lost, forgetting that there was still a war to fight...

While I know I've not mentioned some members of the Grey Company on the list, I feel the ones I have listed are the most important ones, and deserve to either by victorious or go down fighting at the Black Gate. I have a feeling that some of the others that I've not mentioned may have unfortunately perished during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

I don't expect MoL to confirm or deny, or even comment on any of this (it would be a huge spoiler to do so!) - I'm just enjoying speculating on their fates!
